Hurricanes, Cancellations & Chaos: How We Saved This Destination Wedding
It all started in December 2024, when this incredible couple reached out to begin planning their destination wedding. Like so many couples, they were excited, but also overwhelmed with where to even begin.
After getting to know them and what mattered most for their wedding experience, I dove into research and we landed on what felt like the perfect fit: Dreams Mareas in Costa Rica. Everything was falling into place beautifully… until it wasn’t.
On March 7, 2025, I received an unexpected email from Hyatt, they would no longer be affiliated with the resort.
Cue the scramble.
I immediately reached out to Air Canada Vacations, but at that point, they hadn’t received any updates either. So we waited… and hoped.
By March 13, we finally had clarity, but not the kind we wanted. There were no comparable family-friendly resort options available in Costa Rica. Our choices were to pivot destinations entirely, to Mexico or the Dominican Republic.
So, we made the call to cancel and secure a full refund. And just like that… we were back to square one.
After another round of thoughtful research, we found a new home for their celebration: Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall in Jamaica. A stunning property, perfect for their vision. Flights were set for Wednesday, October 29, 2025, and everything was finally feeling back on track.
Until three days before departure.
On Sunday, October 26, I reached out to my couple to schedule a call. A hurricane (Hurricane Melissa) was projected to hit Jamaica on Tuesday, October 28. Having personally experienced Hurricane Beryl in Jamaica the year prior, I knew firsthand what this could mean. And this storm was expected to be worse.
That call was one of the most important moments of the entire planning process. I walked them through every option, but most importantly, I gave them my honest, professional opinion.
We needed to move the wedding. Again.
By 12pm the very next day, with the incredible support of my Transat groups rep, Heather, we did what felt nearly impossible, we relocated the entire wedding.
Fifty-four guests.
One plane.
One resort.
Same wedding date.
Their new destination: Majestic Elegance Costa Mujeres.
Wedding date: November 1st.
Seamless. Protected. Celebrated.
